Yes, there are tons of traditions. For example, when there is a newborn baby, some families will resort to fortune tellers to suggest some characters according to the philosophical five elements to make up a name which shows the future of the baby's life.

In China, the tradition of naming has a long history. There's usually including a last name, a word for genealogy, and a given name. The family name usually stands for the family, and the genealogy is usually chosen by a famous person in the family. Some of them can even be written into a poem, while the given name is the expectation and wish of an individual.For example, my grandfather's surname is Yu, and My father's generation was "Chang" . So my uncle's name is Yu Changhua. My elder aunt's name is Yu Changxin. My father's name is Yu Changwen.
