Master SambhotaSambhota was born in the Thon village of Nyimo,sncounty and he is highly respected by all the Tibetansbecause he compiled and developed the standardTibetan script in the seventh century. At that time kingsongtsen Gamboa sent many young men to India totudy but most of them either lost life or returnedwithout completing their study. But Sambhotasuccessfully went there and studied under manyimportant Indian teachers for many years and finallyen ert created the standard Tibetan script after his return fromIndia. There are different views regarding the origin ofTibetan script, some historians say there was already ascript in Tibet before Sambnota. They say that the oldscript was created by Tonpa shenrap, the founder ofYungdrung Bon. It is also said that most of the old textof Bon religion were written in this script which hasfew different styles, Tarsik Bongyig, ShangshungMarchen and Shangshung Marchung. However, mostof the modern historians say it is true that there was ascript before Sambhota but it was not complete enoughto express the meaning of all the subjects of learningTherefore. the king had to send Sambhota to India forstudy.
