1 .Hi Alex.
2 .It's Martha Clines here.
3 .James White gave me your number.
4 .I hope you don't mind me calling you.
1 .Of course not.
2 .How are you, Martha?
1 .Good thanks.
2 .I'm ringing because l need a bit of advice.
1 .Oh yeah. What about?
1 .The training you did at JPNW a few years ago.
2 .I'm applying for the same thing.
1 .Oh right. Yes, I did mine in 2014.
2 .Best thing I ever did. I'm still working there.
1 .Really? What are you doing?
1 .Well, now I work in the customer services department
2 .but l did my initial training in Finance.
3 .I stayed there for the first two years and then moved to where I am now.
1 .That's the same department I'm applying for.
2 .Did you enjoy it?
1 .I was pretty nervous to begin with. I didn't do well in my exams at school
2 .and I was really worried because I failed Maths.
3 .But it didn't actually matter because I did lots of courses on the job.
1 .Did you get a diploma at the end of your trainee period?
2 .I'm hoping to do the one in business skills.
1 .Yes. That sounds good.
2 .I took the one on IT skills
3 .but I wish I'd done that one instead.
1 .OK, that's good to know.
2 .What about the other trainees?
3 .How did you get on with them?
1 .There were about 20 of us who started at the same time
2 .and we were all around the same age-I was 18
3 .and there was only one person younger than me, who was 17.
4 .The rest were between 18 and 20.
5 .I made some good friends.
1 .I've heard lots of good things about the training at JPNW.
2 .It seems like there are a lot of opportunities there.
1 .Yeah, definitely.
2 .Because of its size you can work in loads of different areas within the organisation.
1 .What about pay?
2 .I know you get a lower minimum wage than regular employees.
1 .That's right - which isn't great.
2 .But you get the same number of days' holiday as everyone else.
3 .And the pay goes up massively if they offer you a job at the end of the training period.
1 .Yeah, but I'm not doing it for the money
2 .- it's the experience I think will be really useful.
3 .Everyone says by the end of the year you gain so much confidence.
1 .You're right. That's the most useful part about it.
2 .There's a lot of variety too.
3 .You're given lots of different things to do.
4 .I enjoyed it all - I didn't even mind the studying.
1 .Do you have to spend any time in college?
1 .Yes, one day each month.
2 .So you get lots of support from both your tutor and your manager.
1 .That's good.
2 .And the company is easy to get to, isn't it?
1 .Yes, it's very dose to the train station so the location's a real advantage.
1 .Have you got a date for your interview yet?
1 .Yes, it's on the 23rd of this month.
1 .So long as you're well prepared there's nothing to worry about.
2 .Everyone's very friendly.
1 .I am not sure what I should wear.
2 .What do you think?
1 .Nothing too casual — like jeans, for example.
2 .If you've got a nice jacket, wear that with a skirt or trousers.
1 .OK. Thanks.
2 .Any other tips?
1 .Erm, well I know it's really obvious but arrive in plenty of time.
2 .They hate people who are late.
3 .So make sure you know exactly where you have to get to.
4 .And one other useful piece of advice my manager told me before I had the interview for this job - is to smile.
5 .Even if you feel terrified.
6 .It makes people respond better to you.
1 .I'll have to practise doing that in the mirror!
1 .Yeah - well, good luck.
2 .Let me know if you need any more information.
1 .Thanks very much.
